Alma Street

Fitzroy

Description: Social Housing
Cost: $4.3 Million
Completion: 2011

Alma Street was the third and final stage of the land owned and managed by Yarra Community Housing in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. On completion of the conversion of the original Victorian and Edwardian terrace houses facing Gertrude Street, we were retained to develop 29 Studio Apartments at the rear of the site with access from Alma Street.

The 32sqm Studio Apartments were designed to have balconies with northern sunlight and cross ventilation to enhance the internal environment of the units and minimise the need for mechanical cooling in summer. Communal solar boosted hot water, communal laundry and a communal living area on ground level were serviced by a safe and secure internal courtyard for the residents. No car parking was provided due to the single low income profile of the tenants combined with the inner urban location of the site. The building incorporates environmentally sustainable design features to reduce the overall environmental impact, improve the comfort and quality of the accommodation and reduce utility costs.
